Pros
- Easy and straightforward collage making process
- Attractive user interface
Cons
- Lack of advanced features
- No options to edit photos before adding to collages
Instagram's standalone app, Layout, provides a simple and intuitive photo collage experience, however, it lacks advanced features.
Creating Photo Collages for Novices
Instagram, owned by Facebook, continues its trend of launching separate apps following the success of Hyperlapse in 2014. Layout is a photo collage app that operates independently of Instagram. The app provides a straightforward process of creating photo collages by displaying your photo gallery at the bottom of the screen upon opening, thus eliminating the need for a blank canvas.
After selecting your photos, a grid choice follows. Each photo can be flipped or mirrored, replaced if it doesn't suit the layout, and other options such as repositioning the grid lines and altering the pictures within their frames are available. An in-app camera feature also allows for quick selfie shots.
Once completed, your collage can be saved to your photo roll or shared through various channels, including Instagram.
Features: A Bare Minimum
If your objective is to create simple and basic photo collages with a few editing options, Layout performs satisfactorily. However, if you seek a feature-rich app for creating artistic works, Layout falls short. Despite an aesthetically pleasing interface and smooth operation, the app is starkly lacking in features.
There are no options to edit photos before placing them in collages, nor are there filters, backgrounds, borders, video, or music. Essentially, it does not measure up to other photo collage makers, even though it offers an attractive user interface.
Could be Better
Layout, despite the backing of Instagram, leaves room for improvement. While the app boasts a sleek user interface and the ease of creating collages, it fails to offer features that are standard in similar apps. Given its limited features, it would have been more logical to include collage making within Instagram itself.
